WATER SUPPLY

The Town draws its water from ten underground bores and surface storage on the Condamine River at Loudoun Weir. In 1997, Loudoun Weir was raised by 1.2 metres doubling the existing storage capacity from 289mL to 588mL. The underground water currently receives no treatment apart from chlorination. The river water is fully treated by sedimentation and filtration.

Dirty or discoloured water is occasionally caused by manganese in the Town water supply and poses no health threat. Council has an ongoing programme to reduce the occurrences of dirty water, but sometimes a dramatic change in the rate of water consumption or a sudden quality change in the raw water sources can result in dirty water events.

Water is pumped from the Water Treatment Plant to the reservoirs at Edward Street and then into the distribution and high level towers.

The Water Treatment Plant, at maximum capacity, can treat approximately 12 million litres a day, but even this falls short of demand on very hot days.
See Water Restrictions.

REVERSE OSMOSIS PLANT

The construction of a reverse osmosis plant will provide an additional 1.7 million litres per day or about 25% of our water supply needs on an annual basis. Will allow the conversion of previously unsuitable water into water suitable for town supply purposes of a very high quality, which will improve the overall quality of our town supply.

The reverse osmosis produces water at a cost comparable to the treatment of river water but is much more reliable in dry times.

WATER AS A RESOURCE IN DALBY

Water is a precious resource in Dalby, as the supply is limited. Residents are urged to conserve water wherever possible. Council charges for water under a user-pays scheme, whereby water customers have a financial incentive to use water wisely. See our Water Saving tips for ideas on how you can save water and money.

Interference with water meters is an offence. Likewise the property owner is responsible for the cost of repair of water meters when meters are damaged by vehicles, lawn mowers etc. Water meters must always be accessible to Council officers. The owner is also responsible for all of the installation after the water meter.

Residents can assist Council in the minimisation of water wastage by reporting any suspected defects in the Town water supply as soon as possible.
